In the US, you must pass the series 7 exam, in order to broker securities. You must have a clean criminal record with no felonies or financial-related crimes. There are no requirements for education or degrees, of which I am aware. You must also pass a series 63 for registration in any particular state. You must be registered with each state in which you prospect for or conduct business. If you want to open a broker/dealer FIRM, then the firm is subject to a whole slew of FINRA regulations about which, I am unqualified to elaborate upon for you. Chris B

In addition to the answer above you need to be sponsored by a securities firm. You just can’t apply to take the test. Some firms may require you to take the Series 65 or 66. This depends on the type of products and services they offer, particularly if they offer a fee based platform offering advisory services

Having a particular degree really means very little but you will need a strong sales background and a large network of contacts for a firm to be interested in hiring you. The people with the best chances now are CPA’s or attorneys who want to change careers. Jay S
