I do know of the Series 7 exam but from there onwards what are the prerequisites and running qualities of a profit taking stock broker? Is a degree in a business orientated major a help for that?

Get a job with a brokerage house as a trainee. You can’t sign up for the Series 7 yourself. A broker/dealer that employs you has to sign you up.
You don’t need to know anything about stock or business because the company will cover what you need to know in the training class. Being a stock broker is a sales job. Given the choice between hiring a successful used car salesman or someone with an MBA in finance, many brokers would prefer the guy with sales experience.
