Im a 21 college student and have decided to take a small amount of risk in the market, perhaps trading options. I have an account with the online broker Scottrade that has a value > 25000. I turned in the paperwork for trading options. So if I were to invest a small amount of my portfolio into a call option for (X) tomorrow morning, what steps do i need to take (besides filling out the order form i know how to do that)? Do I have to own shares in (X)? Also it’s a $1.25 per contract, so does that mean for each single option I buy it cost $1.25? I just started a course in investments and will learn more about options later this semester, I just want a head start and possibly make some money. Thank You.

USAF Dude asked:

Say you order 500 shares of company X, and then what exact tasks does your broker do to complete your order?

I am guessing he

1. Accepts your order/payment
2. Calls his buddy in wallstreet telling him to buy 500 shares of company x.
3. Broker notifies you of the purchase.

More specific the better.
I was thinking of becoming a stock broker, I just wanted to know how the process works.

Kite asked:

I’ve read through a few of the resolved questions, most have mentioned Computershare.

Does anyone know how to use it? I don’t want a broker, and want to purchase online, without having to pay more than around $100 AUS for the account itself.

I also want to buy BHP Billiton shares afterwards, but that’s not so important.

I know my broker Interactive Brokers does not, and neither does any broker I have ever had before, but it seems like a useful asset class to be able to trade.
